The Ohio Office of
Early Childhood Education has worked collaboratively with the
Office of Curriculum and Instruction in the development of
pre-kindergarten content standards for English language arts.
At HCESC Head Start
we are preparing for more intentional and systematic curriculum
development . Below are the five areas of language and literacy
we will be focusing on in the fall.
Phonological
Awareness:
Phonological
awareness is the process of being aware and learning to identify
sounds. It includes knowing when words begin or end with the
same sound, and that words can rhyme. Through the year children
will begin to "read" familiar words and recognize sounds in word
( e.g. /b/ as in bubble, boy).
.
Oral
Language:
Oral language
involves listening and speaking. It includes following
simple instructions, taking part in discussions, and singing
songs. It also includes asking questions and telling
stories.
Letter/Print
Knowledge:
Letter and
print knowledge is learning about the printed word and
beginning to write. It includes a growing understanding that
writing can represent thoughts and spoken word. It also
includes learning to write.
Vocabulary Building:
Vocabulary building involves learning the meanings of new
words as well as how to use those words in conversations.
Reading Process:
Learning about the
reading process involves an understanding that print represents
another's thoughts. Children are learning about books, how they
are read, using the pictures to help them understand the print,
and using books to help them gain new information.
