Winter days can seem
to be long and children as well as adults can get "cabin fever".
Children are always learning at home as well as school, so we want
to be sure they are engaged in meaningful activities. Here are some
things parents can do with the children throughout the day in order
to help children keep learning in positive ways:
- Read to your child
daily. Have books, magazines and other reading materials available
- Turn off the computer
and tv and play a game
- Give your child a
pad of paper and a pencil. Ask them to write down words they see
in your home.
- Visit the library
- Take "night walks"
after dinner
- Play in the snow -
build igloos and snowmen
- Encourage your child
to ask questions and solve problems on their own.
- Play counting games
with your child
- Discuss the shapes
and colors of all kinds of objects
- Give your child a
word and see if s/he can thing of another word that rhymes with
it
- Give your child small
tasks to be responsible for and able to finish
- Let your child tell
you about a favorite book or story
- Give your child opportunities
to draw, scribble, and write with paper and pencils
